Becky’s first memory of competitive swimming

Visiting Bromsgrove’s new community leisure centre, Becky spoke to the Bromsgrove Standard about what first inspired her to swim competitively. It was the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester and her parents had taken her to watch the swimming. She said, “I saw the crowd and the amazing atmosphere and thought ‘this is what I want to do’.”

Becky then went on to discuss her excitement for Birmingham to host the Commonwealth Games in 2022, saying “Hopefully a lot of people will get a chance to see the event […] and be inspired like I was to get to the next one and the Olympics.”

During her visit, Becky was joined by fellow Olympian and friend, Steve Parry, along with Everyone Active to see the opening of the new centre. Over 120 children and their families went along to the event to try out the facilities on offer. After spending the day there and even having a quick go on the climbing wall, Becky praised the venue, saying “It’s amazing – I’ve been to a lot of pools and leisure centres in my time. […] It’s got so much – there’s something for everyone.”
