1 Day, 3 Volunteers, 3 Qualifications

We escaped the snowy weather up North this weekend and ventured down to Wiltshire to spend time with three amazing young volunteers from Royal Wootton Bassett Otters Swimming Club.

Megan, 17, Millie, 16, and Maddy, 17, (pictured right with Becky Adlington Training tutor, Kelly) already have over 10 years of volunteering at the club under their swim caps between them, along with GCSE PE and their own experiences of competitive swimming. This, along with Kelly's knowledge of the club from previously tutoring there, helped us make the decision to accept them as candidates for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). All three candidates were also already active in a supportive teaching environment, working alongside Level 2 teachers in the club’s Learn to Swim programme.

After an initial assessment, we were confident that they already had the knowledge and skills required for Level 1 and decided, rather than putting them on a four day course, we would visit them and spend the day assessing them to confirm they were Level 1 standard. One of our Becky Adlington Training Values is to ensure all our learners don’t just know the theory behind swimming teaching, but are confident in the practical side of their role, too. Even through RPL, we had to be sure that our three volunteers were capable and skilled enough in their role to deserve the Swim England Level 1 Teaching Assistant qualification based on their practical skills…

Well, we were blown away!

Megan, Millie and Maddy each demonstrated, without doubt, our value - 'Inspire to Inspire'. They were creative, supportive, enthusiastic and had great awareness of stroke techniques and the importance of skill development. They worked as a team with everyone on poolside from children, parents, young helpers, other assistants and Level 2 teachers. Not only did they assist, they planned their own activities and confidently led them as part of the lessons. They challenged the existing teachers, showcased new ideas and thoroughly deserved to be recognised as Swim England Level 1 Teaching Assistants.

We are so happy to welcome all three volunteers to our Becky Adlington Training family and would like to thank Royal Wootton Bassett Otters for choosing to train their dedicated volunteers 'the Becky way'.

After leading the RPL Course, our tutor, Kelly said “I’ve had the best day meeting these incredible young volunteers. RPL is a great way to recognise passionate volunteers and their potential to inspire the next generation of teachers and swimmers alike. I can't wait to see them soon for their Level 2 course!”
