Sponge Team Challenge

At Becky Adlington Training, we're proud to have the most dynamic, engaging, passionate tutors in the industry leading our courses. We know how rewarding teaching the next generation of swimmers can be - and the best way to do this is through fun!

It was our tutor Kelly’s turn to share her Game of the Week. With a career in swimming spanning almost two decades, including 2 years as a lead teacher at the University of Wales, 2 years as a Swimming Development Officer for Newport City Council, an Ofsted Grade 1 National Training provider, and a qualified Swim England Tutor since 2007, it’s no surprise that Kelly has a passion for all things swimming.

So, the big reveal. Kelly’s Game of the Week is… *cue drum roll*
Sponge Team Challenge!

How to play

You will need: a bucket and some basic bath sponges (large ones work best).

In pairs or teams, place a bucket on the pool deck and throw all the bath sponges into the water. The challenge is for each team member to collect one sponge at a time using your chosen method of travel. This could be hopping, skipping, walking for lower abilities or full stroke in deep water for the more advanced. They then squeeze out all the water from the sponge into their team bucket.

The team with the first ‘full bucket’ or the bucket with the most water once all the sponges have been collected, are the winners!

"This is a simple game with inexpensive, reusable equipment you can bring from home. It’s a great game where you can incorporate or guide your swimmers into specific travel skills or strokes. It also allows them to work as a team, building their social skills, problem solving and communication – all skills that can be so valuable for every day life. You could even integrate safe entries and exits each time to get to the bucket, adding value with key water safety skills." - Kelly
